Senior Nutrition

Congregate Meals

Picture
Various communities throughout Gilliam, Hood River, Morrow, Sherman, Umatilla, Wasco, and Wheeler counties offer nutritious meals in a group setting for individuals age 60 and above, and their spouses (regardless of age). Frequently, the mealtime also includes recreational and social activities, as well as nutrition/health education. All meals provide 1/3 of the recommended daily nutritional allowance. Meals include: entrée, vegetable, grain, fruit and/or dessert, and a beverage.

Individuals age 60 and older are eligible for meals at no-cost; however a "suggested donation" would be very welcome. The senior meals program is supported by grants, but the grants cover just a portion of the program costs. Fundraising, support from county government, and local donations are essential to continue the program. The suggested donation for the meal for individuals 60 and older varies according to each meal site location. Everyone is welcome to eat at the meal sites. Those who are under 60 are asked to pay the meal site's posted cost of the meal.

Please refer to the county list below for a Congregate Meal/Senior Meal site near you.

Home Delivered Meals

Picture
The Home Delivered Meal program is more than just a meal! Friendly volunteers deliver nourishing hot and frozen meals that are nutritionally balanced to provide one-third of the recommended daily nutritional allowance. Volunteer drivers deliver these meals, offering a short conversation and informal wellness check for participants receiving the meals. This short visit is often the highlight of an isolated and lonely senior's day. It also fosters independent living, a sense of security, and helps to prevent premature or unnecessary admittance into a care facility.

Home Delivered Meals are available throughout Hood River, Morrow, Sherman, Umatilla, and Wasco Counties. Home Delivered Meals delivery days and times vary from community to community. Upon approval participants will be provided seven meals per week.

Participants are encouraged to contribute toward the cost of their meal as it helps ensure our program has the sustainability to continue for those that need it. In some communities, a monthly statement indicating the suggested contribution amount will be sent to participants. However, no eligible participant 60 years of age and older shall be denied participation because of failure or inability to contribute.

Eligibility
Persons 60 years of age and older who are home-bound by reason of illness, incapacitating disability or are otherwise isolated may be eligible to receive home delivered meals. You may also receive home delivered meals, regardless of age, if you are the spouse or disabled dependent child who resides with the eligible person age 60 and older.

An in-home assessment must be completed by a CAPECO Case Manager to determine eligibility. An in-home assessment will take place upon the initial request for the program and on an annual or as needed basis. In some cases, meals may be delivered to individuals under the age of 60 who are Medicaid eligible as determined by Aging and People with Disabilities.

For more information about these programs, call 855-673-2372.
