Mission: To eliminate hunger and its root causes…because no one should be hungry. CAPECO Food Share in affiliation with Oregon Food Bank (www.oregonfoodbank.org), is a community based non-profit organization dedicated to fighting hunger and its root causes. Through our 14 Local Member Agencies we offer assistance to hungry families and individuals in Umatilla, Morrow, Gilliam and Wheeler Counties. Facts: · 40% of the people served by our agencies are children · 42% of households have at least on person working · 80% of households served live below the poverty level · 31% of households served are two parent families Why are people in Eastern Oregon hungry? · Housing costs have soared while wages have stagnated · The gap between rich and poor grew four times faster in Oregon than nationally. · The changing nature of employment in Oregon resulting in fewer family industrial jobs and more low-wage service jobs. · Seasonal employment How does CAPECO Food Share help? We distributed 565,435 pounds of food last year to the 14 local member agencies/food pantries. Where does the food come from? The CAPECO Food Share receives food from: · Oregon Food Bank · Local food companies and grocery stores · Farmers and gardeners · Food drives and individual food donors · US Department of Agriculture What kinds of donations can CAPECO accept? CAPECO Food Share can pick up, handle, inspect, store and distribute most food products, including: fresh, dry, canned, discontinued, out of specification, frozen, code-dated or clean damaged foods. We can also accept household goods, pet food, health/beauty aids, paper products and diapers. How do I know what happens to my food donation? CAPECO Food Share is monitored by Oregon Food Bank to ensure safe handling of food. We contract with our member agencies to make sure that donated products will not be sold, traded or bartered. Recipients are never charged for food. How is CAPECO Food Share funded? We are a community-based non-profit agency.
